The relationship between images and user experience

October 2, 2017

They say: “A picture is worth a thousand words”. 90% of all the information we perceive and which is transmitted to our brain is visual. Images can be a powerful way to capture the attention of users, and differentiate your product from all the others. One picture can convey more than a lot of words to the viewer. Moreover, images can cross language barriers, in a way that simple text cannot do. Images are much more than decoration; they have the power to capture attention, or keep the user away. In this article, we’ll present a number of useful principles for correctly integrating images into your site.

Use only relevant images

Every picture has a story to tell. Just like in writing, it is better to know what to say, and only then start writing. Using irrelevant images can take the user to places you don’t want them to go, or simply confuse them. One of the most dangerous elements in any design is images that convey the wrong message. Users respond to visual images faster than text, so make sure the content matches the image. You must select images that are closely related to the text, as well as to the objectives of your service or product.

Images should not create visual noise

The principle “more is better” does not apply to images. Only select images that show the purpose of your product or service. Select only the images that will really capture users’ attention.

Use high quality images without distortion

Make sure the images you’re using match the right size for all platforms. And, of course, you should not show pictures where you see the pixels.

Use different visualizations

It is possible and sometimes even worthwhile to use both illustration and photography for the same product. Photography is ideal for viewing specific products or services. For example, if we want to show a room in a hotel – it’s worth taking pictures, of course. Illustration, however, is useful for representing concepts and metaphors.

Show real people

Human images are a very effective way to activate users. When we see the faces of other people, it makes us feel like we are really connecting with them – therefor the product or service they are connected to, not just to a still product, or a conceptual service. However, many sites are notorious for using staged photographs, with perfect models, far from reality, that not only do not convey honesty, but even ridicule or frustrate users. A simple rule of thumb is to use high quality photos of people who match the nature of your app or site; authentic people who represent your product, company, or culture.

The image of the product  itself must be beautiful

A good image does all the hard work for you: it captures users’ attention, and differentiates your product. You need to know that good photography of a product requires work and money. But, after investing the money and time, the investment returns easily because the products simply sell themselves.

Show “personality” and turn to the emotional side of users

Images can convey the essence of a product or service, and in addition they can surprise and even inspire joy or any other emotion you desire. Emotionally powerful images are a factor that ensures that users continue to delve deeper into the experience you are trying to convey. And using images is an ideal way to achieve this goal, because the emotional part of our brain is influenced by images and illustrations, especially of people, especially within the context of “stories.”

Summary

Any visual aid in the design of your site leaves an impression on the user. Think about images in terms of their usability, and remember that engaging images have a unique ability to inspire your audience, and provide useful information. While it can take time – invest this time to make any image in your application or on your site, to support and enhance your user experience.
